3 Figure 1.2 How to Read a Journal Reference
Using the References section at the back of this text, you can find the complete source for each citation that appears in a chapter. This figure shows the different components of a typical journal reference. In the chapter itself, the citation for this particular reference would read “(Peetz & Kammrath, 2011).” Figure 1.2 How to Read a Journal Reference Don H. Hockenbury and Sandra E. 5 Figure 1.3 Time Spent Playing Video Games
Anderson and Dill’s (2000) survey of 227 college students revealed that the amount of time participants spent playing video games decreased as they attained higher education. Notice that even at the college level, students reported playing video games for more than two hours per week on the average. Figure 1.3 Time Spent Playing Video Games Don H. Hockenbury and Sandra E. 8 Figure 1.6 Changes in Perception of Exercise in Hotel Experiment
The two graphs below show the changes in the perceptions of the experimental group participants, who were informed about the health benefits of work-related exercise during the first session. Even though their behavior at work and outside of work did not change, the new information increased their perceptions of how much regular exercise they were getting and that work-related tasks were a form of exercise. In comparison, perceptions were unchanged in the control group participants, who did not receive information about the health benefits of work-related exercise. 9 Figure 1.7 Changes in Physiological Variables in Hotel Experiment
Just four weeks after being told about the health benefits of work-related exercise, the informed group participants showed significant improvements on several health measures, including weight, percentage of body fat, and blood pressure. Control group participants, who were not told about the health benefits of work-related exercise, showed no changes on the same measures.
