1) After World War I, the U.S. economy soared The average worker’s spending power went up 32% 1930 – 2/3 of American homes had electricity

The 18th Amendment 1) Alcohol abuse was at an all time high
1919 – Congress ratifies the 18th Amendment Alcohol is illegal 2) Led to the rise of organized crime; The Mafia Al Capone Capone and his brutal army of mobsters ruled Chicago’s underground alcohol scene 3) 18th Amendment would be repealed in 1933

Mass Entertainment 1) Workplace reforms meant Americans had more leisure time (free time) 2) Flappers – women dressed in short dresses, shorter hair, and wore a lot of makeup Tin Pan Alley – a loud and exciting form of music characterized by banging on a piano

The Red Scare 1) The Red Scare; a time of fear and uncertainty that went on during the 20s 2) It started because of the 1917 Revolution in Russia Russia’s czar (king) was overthrown and the country became communist 3) With all the workers strikes in America during this time, many Americans feared communism would take over the U.S. and overthrow capitalism
