6 We need our teeth for? Smile Eat Talk Discussion

7 It’s important to look after our teeth and mouth?
We only get 1 set of adult teeth. No extra sets. We need to look after our mouth because gums and the jaw-bone underneath hold our teeth in place . If we don’t look after our teeth, they will become decayed and could be lost. Discussion

8 What causes tooth decay?
3. The bacteria eat the sugar in our food and drinks and makes acid. The acid attacks our teeth. 2. PLAQUE is a thin sticky film. It contains bacteria. 1. Germs build up everyday in our mouth. They are called PLAQUE. Explain what causes tooth decay by reading the content in the ascending order 1, 2, 3. Read point 1 and show them plaque on the tooth (tooth with yellow stain) Read point 2 and show them bacteria (green colour image) Read point 3 and show them bacteria attacking the tooth (tooth with black cloud and green bacteria) .

9 4. Enamel is the hard layer on the outside of teeth
4. Enamel is the hard layer on the outside of teeth. The acid from the bacteria attacks the teeth. 5. If the enamel is eaten away, the tooth gets decayed. It will cause tooth ache. 6. The decayed tooth might require a filling to stop further damage. Otherwise it will be lost. After the images have appeared, point to the images and explain the following. First image – shows plaque on the tooth Second image – bacteria on the tooth Third image – bacteria attacking the tooth Fourth image – tooth decay occurs and a hole appears. Read the content in ascending order 4,5,6 and explain about tooth ache, filling and tooth loss.

10 How can we prevent tooth decay?
Brushing our teeth. Visiting the dentist. Eating a healthy balanced diet. Discussion

11 Brushing our teeth Brush your teeth twice daily for 2 minutes with a fluoride tooth paste. Mole-R always carries a toothbrush and uses toothpaste. We should brush using a toothbrush with a small head and medium textured bristles and toothpaste containing fluoride. We should use a pea sized amount of fluoride tooth paste for brushing our teeth. The fluoride content of our toothpaste should be between 1350 to 1500ppm (parts per million) (Have a look at your toothpaste tube at home) If you have a small-headed tooth brush and fluoride toothpaste, you can show them to the class. Please note that these are not to be used in anyone’s mouth. Read the information on the amount of toothpaste. Point to the image corresponding to that and inform that a pea sized amount is sufficient enough to brush and that they don’t require large quantities of toothpaste. If you have been supplied with a small-headed tooth brush and toothpaste, demonstrate what a pea sized amount is by applying a pea-size amount of tooth paste to the toothbrush. Read the toothpaste ingredients on the packaging for the amount of fluoride content. Read ppm as parts per million. Point to the corresponding image. Inform that we can find the fluoride content of our tooth paste by looking at the side of the tooth paste tube. If you have been supplied with toothpaste, show the side of the tooth paste for the fluoride content. Ask the children to look at the side of the toothpaste when they next shop and see if their toothpaste contains enough fluoride ( parts per million) in the toothpaste. .

12 Brushing our teeth We should brush our teeth twice
Brush your teeth twice daily for 2 minutes with a fluoride tooth paste. We should brush our teeth twice daily for 2 minutes. 2 Minutes We should brush daily at bedtime and at one other occasion with a fluoridated tooth paste ( ppm). If you have been supplied with sand timer, show them the sand timer and emphasise the importance of brushing for 2 minutes. Brushing at bedtime is important to protect our teeth while we sleep.

13 Brushing our teeth. We should brush in small circular
Brush your teeth twice daily for 2 minutes with a fluoride tooth paste. We should brush in small circular movements and on all the surfaces of our tooth. We should change our tooth brush every 3 months or if the bristles are bent over. Read the content explaining the importance of changing the brush once every 3 months, or if the bristles are bent. (This is because effective bristles help us to clean our teeth properly and can prevent tooth decay and gum disease). Read the content explaining that we should always spit our toothpaste and should not rinse. Inform rinsing after brushing will remove the fluoride protection. We should spit our toothpaste after brushing and should not rinse. If we rinse, the fluoride protection will be lost.

14 Why is brushing our teeth important?
Brushing our teeth, brushes away the plaque. Fluoride helps to strengthen our enamel. Toothpaste contains special substances called Fluoride. Brushing twice daily with fluoride tooth paste will protect our teeth from tooth decay.
