1 nmc 2008 scholarship 3.0 collaborative digital compilations
virginia kuhn iml // usc 13 june 2008 I was going to talk about the technical difficulties of revising several new media projects into one interface for the purposes of an ‘edited anthology’ in new media but the tech issues are the least of it and many are self evident. What I more want to focus on is the theory of asking scholars to revise. To that end, we must revise and jury ourselves. But how do we navigate the issues of revision in registers of sound, text AND image? I use a case study to suggest both some obstacles as well as some strategies.

2 nmc 2008 revising new media translating new media
aka “huh?, it’s finished!” When students make new media projects, they are wont to revise but scholars, it turns out, are worse. And who gives the edit advise in sound, text and image across disparate platforms? I will tell a story to illustrate.

3 CCCC 2006 My story began at a conference where we tried to disrupt the notion of the regular conference panel.

4 CCCC2006 We called it from conference to gallery and had 12 scholars approach this as a digital art opening.

5 CCCC 2006 Attendees circulated with the work and with the presenters. We revived the notion of conference as a place to confer and a colleague made a documentary of the conference in general and our panel//gallery in particular.

6 nmc 2008 Then the editors of Kairos the longest running peer reviewed ejournal in the field of rhetoric, technology and pedagogy asked us to compile and submit it to them for publication.

7 nmc 2008 kairos results After much work, we came up with this. From gallery to webtext. The editors asked for significant revisions!!!! Much to our dismay.

8 edit this! KAIROS From 0:50 to 2:50, the white-on-black textual play would likely be more effective in communicating the argument about tics if it were interspersed, in a more tic-y nature, with more video clips. We suggest using some of the Stooges clip (see comments below) here instead. Also, the spinning-words Text Effects at the beginning are a bit too much (and take longer to be able to view on screen): a few of these effects makes viewers impatient, which is good considering your topic. More than a few is annoying, however, which goes beyond the theme, we think. Some of those Text Effects could be changed to appear on screen more rapidly, which would also be effective in relation to tic-ness.

9 nmc 2008 morphing from radical conference panel to
anthology in manifesto issue How do we morph from a radical conference to a manifesto piece, equally radical.

10 nmc 2008 revise the radical?

14 nmc 2008 I solved it by cutting a new film that wrapped around my original student group film.
