2 England Becomes Protestant
1521:Henry VIII attack on Luther’s ideas Henry VIII wants a son 1527: Henry convinced that wife (Catherine) would have no son Wanted a divorce and take a younger queen Church law did not allow divorce Pope could annul (set aside) marriage Pope turns Henry down 2

3 The Reformation Parliament
1529: Henry called Parliament into session and asked to pass set of laws that ended the Pope’s power in England This is known as the Reformation Parliament 1533: Henry secretly married Anne Boleyn Parliament legalized Henry’s divorce from Catherine 1534: Henry’s break with the pope was completed when Parliament voted to approve the Act of Supremacy Called on people to take an oath recognizing the divorce & accepting Henry as head of England’s Church 3

4 Consequences of Henry’s Changes
Henry did not immediately get a son Anne Boleyn executed after giving birth to daughter Henry took 3rd wife (Jane Seymour) 1537: Gave him a son (Edward) Henry married 3 more times 1547: After Henry’s death, each of his 3 children ruled England Edward becomes king of England 1553: Mary (Daughter of Catherine) took throne Returned English Church to Pope Elizabeth inherits throne 4

5 Elizabeth Faces Other Challenges
Elizabeth I determined to return her kingdom to Protestantism 1559: Parliament sets up Church of England (Angelican Church) Elizabeth at head Only legal church of England To please Protestants, Priests were allowed to married Sermons were delivered in English To please Catholics, Church of England kept robes Elizabeth brought religious peace to England 5
