Objectives: The student will discuss and define the ten leading sport injuries The student will learn the proper methods of how to avoid sports related injuries. The student will define, discuss and apply the R.I.C.E principle. The student will learn weight room etiquette The student will learn proper and safe weight lifting techniques. SOLs: 9.1, 9.1b, 9.1d, 9.1e, 9.1f, 9.1g: 9.2, 9.2a, 9.2c, 9.4, 9.4a, 9.4b

10 Most Common Causes of Training Injury
Incorrect Technique- This is the most common cause of weight training injury Too much weight- This is when you have to jerk or heave weight to lift it. Bad Spotting- A spotter needs to always be alert to the possibility of failure…not looking around or joking with friends.

Incorrect form while lifting –this can put a lifter out of their safety zone Training too often- You can not grow when you over train. Not Stretching- stretching helps elongate a muscle after warm-up and weight training. Inadequate warm up- You should do a high rep, low intensity quick paced exercise to increase blood flow to the muscles.

Negatives- eccentric. Or lowering the weight. The most difficult. Poor Training - If you under eat and continue to train hard, you are likely to get hurt. Lack of concentration - If you are distracted, preoccupied, or lackadaisical when you work out, you are inviting injury.

Weight Room Etiquette NEVER attempt an exercise before learning how to perform it properly Always use a spotter Always use collars on all bars Always replace plates and dumbbells to appropriate place If sweaty, always wipe off bench after use Never use offensive language

Never drop or throw plates or dumbbells Keep benches in their designated area Glass bottles are not permitted NO FOOD Proper footwear is required Respect your fellow classmates at all times Be courteous to other students by sharing
