1 Paris in the Twentieth Century
Chapters 11-13: Beauty in a Dystopia

2 Journal: Difficulties and Victory
“‘I mean that chance comes from an Arabic word signifying ‘difficult’! Exactly! For in the world there are nothing but difficulties to overcome! And with perseverance and intelligence, victory can be yours’” (Verne 162).

3 The Marvels of Industry
“In this herculean task, industry seemed to have achieved the extreme limits of the possible” (131). “[T]he recently docked gigantic Leviathan IV; the last century’s Great Eastern would not have been worthy of her launch” (137). Is all progress purposeful? The Great Eastern -Length: 692 feet (211m) -Beam: 83 feet (25m) -Design: Iron hull powered by sails, steam paddles and steam propeller. -Construction dates:  -Designer: Isambard Kingdom Brunel -Function: Passenger ship later converted to laying submerged telegraph cable. (Too big to fit through the Suez Canal) -Other: Designed for 4,000 passengers and 400 crew.

4 Quinsonnas’ Opinions on Women
“The Frenchwoman has become Americanized; she speaks seriously about serious matters, she takes life seriously, she rides on the rigid saddle of modern manners, dresses poorly, tastelessly, and wears corsets of galvanized tin which can resist the most powerful pressures” (142). Are Quinsonnas’ concerns seen as positive or negative attributes in modern America?

5 Joining the Work Force “At this moment you present the pathetic spectacle of a poet who is dying of hunger yet nourishes hope!” (164). What qualities are admirable in Michel? Is he a relatable character? Do you feel the need to cheer for or against him?

6 A Noble Purpose “‘Amaze the age?’
‘Such is the noble purpose of my life; I believe I have my business in hand, and first of all I plan to try it out abroad! As you surely know, that is where great reputations are established’” (171). What does it mean to amaze the age? What would it take to do so: in Verne’s world? in ours? in Michel’s?

Poem Not so good example from Siddhartha– yours should be better That is What I thought and realized When I heard Your teachings Why I am going On my way— not to seek another And better doctrine For I know There is None But to leave all doctrines And all teachers And to reach My goal alone— Or die Original That is what I thought and realized when I heard your teachings.
