Figure 1 Oxytocin-Midbrain Dopamine Circuit for Modulation of Social Behavior The schema depicts the authors’ finding on distinct projections of parvocellular OT neurons to the ventral tegmental area (VTA) and substantia nigra (SN). The axonal OT release in these regions led to opposite effects: the activation of VTA DA neurons and the inhibition—via interneurons—of SN DA neurons. The forebrain projections of these neurons to prefrontal cortex (PFC), caudate putamen (CPU), nucleus accumbens (Acb), and ventral hippocampus (vHippo) could enhance the salience of partner-directed behavior versus exploratory behavior. The proposed behavioral hypothesis should be demonstrated with actual experiments. Neuron , DOI: ( /j.neuron ) Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Inc. Terms and Conditions
