European Data Supervisor
Is an independent supervisory authority devoted to protecting personal data and privacy. It does so by: Monitoring the EU administration's processing of personal data; Advising on policies and legislation that affect privacy; and. Co-operating with similar authorities to ensure consistent data protection. Ignacio Manrique Calle

Why is it necesary? Data is sent and recieved constantly through many means (internet, mobile phones, etc.) Some rights to privacy might not be respected. The right to protection of personal data is a fundamental right in the European community and in every Member State. Data Protection Authorities (DPAs) ensure that this right is respected. Methodology of the EDPs
1.-The EDPS receives complaints from EU staff members as well as from other people who feel that their personal data have been mishandled 2.-If a complaint is admissible, the EDPS carries out an inquiry. 3.-The findings are communicated to the complainant, and necessary measures are adopted. Hierarchy In order to monitor compliance with the International Regulation EDPS largely relies on the Data Protection Officers (DPOs) who are to be appointed in each institution/body. The DPOs are under the EDPs main authorities. Ignacio Manrique Calle

EDPs Main Authorities' Mission
Supervise: They guarantee that every intitution in the European Union respect the fundamental right to privacy. This includes previous opinions, information and how to make complaints, decissions about complaints, etc. Assess: Give recommendations for the new legislation that directly infer over the protection of the personal data. Cooperate: Work with other institutions and authorities bound to this field at national and international level. Ignacio Manrique Calle

The Basis ``Article 8 Protection of personal data 1. Everyone has the right to the protection of personal data concerning him or her. 2. Such data must be processed fairly for specified purposes and on the basis of the consent of the person concerned or some other legitimate basis laid down by law. Everyone has the right of access to data which has been collected concerning him or her, and the right to have it rectified. 3.
