2 Modernism Modernism is a philosophical movement that, along with cultural trends and changes, arose from far-reaching transformations in Western society in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Among the factors that shaped Modernism was the development of modern industrial societies and the rapid growth of cities, followed then by the horror of World War I. Modernism also rejected the certainty of Enlightenment thinking, and many modernists rejected religious belief

World War I gave way to modernism. It worked to change people’s thoughts. Innovations in writing: Writers wanted to leave the painful past behind and express their fears and doubts in a way that fit their new suspicion of tradition. 7 Characteristics of Literature within Modernism
Literature Exhibits Perspectivism Meaning comes from the individual’s perspective and is thus personalized; A single story might be told from the perspective of several different people, with the assumption that the “truth” is somewhere in the middle Writing The Sound and The Fury by William Faulkner achieved this idea through his depiction of human consciousness. The Story has 3 different points of view. All of which are somewhat unreliable.
