1 Chemical Equations Writing and Balancing

2 Writing Chemical Equations
In a chemical reaction one or more reactants change into one or more products. Catalysts are substances that speed up the reactions but is not used up in the reaction. Word equations describe what happens in a chemical reaction in shorthand form. Ex: Reactants  Products Iron + oxygen  iron(III) oxide Chemical equations are representations of chemical reactions. A skeleton equation is a chemical equation that does not indicate the relative amounts of the reactants and products.

7 Balancing Chemical Equations
A balanced equation is a chemical reaction in which each side of the equation has the same number of atoms of each element and mass is conserved. Sometimes a skeleton equation is already balanced. Rules for Writing and Balancing Equations on TB pg 327
