4 The fundamental principles of democratic government:

5 The fundamental principles of democratic government:
Let’s define each principle. Let’s give an example for each principle. (things I will teach)

6 protection of fundamental freedoms
the basic rights of citizens must be guarded (by the government) to prevent them from being taken away

7 protection of fundamental freedoms
the courts prevent Congress from making laws to take away “freedom of speech”

8 consent of the governed
people are the source of all governmental power (citizens have the final say)

9 consent of the governed
An amendment (made by Congress) must be approved by the states

10 that the people have given it the power to do
limited government government may do only those things that the people have given it the power to do (is not all-powerful)

11 The “Bill of Rights” says what the government can NOT do

12 representative government
people elect (some of their own) people to make laws and run the government for them

The people in each state send someone from their state to Congress to make laws

14 majority rule with minority rights
the group that has the most votes gets its way; but it can not take away the rights of the others

The Democrats are running Congress, but the Republicans still have a voice
