Dear Parents, Our topics in the Reception classes until May half term is ‘Minibeasts’. After the half term we will start our ‘Water’ topic. Within these topics we will cover the following areas as part of the Foundation Stage Curriculum: Communication Language and Literacy Continued reinforcement of letter recognition and formation. Development of reading skills through individual reading, and through regular practice with key words Regular opportunities to practise emergent writing. Use of a range of fiction and poetry books e.g. stories with predictable structures and patterned language, traditional stories and rhyme. Use of non-fiction texts including recounts and information books Shared and guided writing including writing letters, recounts, labels, captions and making books. Say and use number names in order, in familiar contexts Find one more or less than a number from 1-20 Order a given set of numbers Begin to use the vocabulary involved in adding and subtracting Begin to relate addition to combining two sets of objects and to counting on Using quantities and objects to subtract two single digit numbers and count back to find the answer Name 2D and 3D shapes and describe their properties Use shapes to describe and make models, pictures and patterns Sorting coins – 1p, 2p, 5p, 10p, 20p, 50p, £1, £2 Use language such as more or less, longer or shorter, heavier or lighter to make direct comparisons of two quantities Compare two numbers. Say a number that lies between two given numbers up to 10 Count reliably up to 20. To solve problems including doubling, halving and sharing Know the days of the week and months of the year in order Talk about, recognise and recreate simple patterns Mathematical Development Understanding of the World Find out about minibeasts and their habitats Visit from the zoolab Use programmes toys (beebots) Explore sound and music Find out about water and under the sea Expressive Arts and Design Collage, painting and printing using a variety of media Making paper mache minibeasts Observational drawings Explore a range of musical instruments and recognise how sounds can be changed Sing songs from memory and recognise sound patterns, beat and tempo Imaginative role play Physical Development Development of fine motor skills using a range of small and large equipment. Development of gross motor skills indoors and outdoors Opportunity to handle tools, objects, construction and malleable materials. Awareness of others and use of space. Throwing and catching skills Move confidently and with imagination to music. Personal Social and Emotional Development On going activities to encourage independence, concentration, confidence and social skills. Exploring different feelings and how to express emotions Father’s Day There is a strong emphasis on practical activities to develop the children’s learning.
