Main features 2013: PRC President Xi Jinping launched The Silk road economic belt and the 21st- century Maritime Silkroad or One Belt One Road (OBOR) later rebaptized: Belt & Road Initiative BRI): an economic strategy connecting the two ends of Eurasia along two routes–one by sea and six by rail, road, powergrid, IT and infrastructural corridors overland 2017: Jyrki Katainen, Vice Pres EU Commission redefined the goal: improving connectivity by infrastructural investment agreements in Euarasia, ensuring reciprocity in market access conditions for traders & investors, by lowering non-tariff barriers, simplifying clearance & quarantine processes, transparency of technical measures and freer flow of labour Character: bilateral agreements PRC- 90 countries (2018), not one treaty 1.900 projects (2018) Impact on 4,9 billion people, forming 65% of global GDP. Summary CN driving force behind BRI, EU junior CN private investment in BRI >> EU but equal funding by CN and EU private& policy banks/funds Next 5 years expected BRI investment CN plus 350 bil US$ Number of countries stabilized Definition of corridors and routes variable BRI major impact on global economy but due to diversity of economies and political systems, creating a single economic BRI block is long haul.
