Elements, Mixtures & Compounds
2
Where are all elements listed?
The periodic table What is an element? An element is a substance that cannot be split into simpler substances by chemical means. Examples? Hydrogen (H), Magnesium (Mg), Oxygen (O)
3
What is a compound? A compound is formed when two or more elements chemically combine. Examples: H O H20 Hydrogen + Oxygen Water Fe S FeS Iron Sulfur Iron Sulfide
4
What is a mixture? A mixture is formed when two or more elements are mixed together but not chemically combined. Examples: Sand & water Mixture of iron and sulfur
5
Metals and Non-Metals Non-Metals Metals
6
Examples of Metals: Iron (Fe) State: Solid Colour: Grey Magnesium (Mg) State: Solid Colour: Grey
7
Non – Metals Oxygen (O) State: Gas Colour: Colourless Carbon (C) State: Solid Colour: Black
8
When elements take part in a chemical reaction, sometimes they lose their individual properties.
Example: Hydrogen Oxygen Water (Gas) (Gas) (Liquid)
9
Carbon + Oxygen Carbon Dioxide
(Black solid) (Gas) (Colourless Gas) Magnesium Oxygen Magnesium Oxide (Metal) (Gas) (White powder)
10
Iron + Sulfur Iron sulfide (Metal) (Yellow powder) (Black solid)
Mixture – Iron & Sulfur Chemical reaction Compound – Iron Sulfide
