Revising the role of Fezziwig
LESSON OBJECTIVE:
To understand why Dickens has Fezziwig in his novella. What is the point in him being a character?
LESSON OUTCOME:
To explain using relevant quotations how Dickens uses Fezziwig as a message to Victorian readers.

3. 1.) Finish this quotation “Come in and know me better man!”
2.) The Ghost of Christmas’ Yet to Come walks slowly towards Scrooge to show that it is in power, to build tension and to make Scrooge wait so that his status as a rich man is stripped from him.
3.) When Scrooge says that the poor are a “surplus” and should die, it reflects how the rich in the Victorian Times believed the poor were a waste and a strain on resources. Dickens wanted to change that view through this book.
4.)Scrooge read a lot of adventure books to escape.
5.) The poor in Stave 3 take their dinners to the bakers.

4. Working Conditions in the Victorian Times:
Long and excruciating hours.
No breaks.
No unions.
The rich wanted to exploit the poor and make as much money out of them.
Bosses of workhouses would use punishment as a way to get their workers to work harder and faster.

5. Dickens = the hero for the poor
THERE SHOULD BE NO SOCIAL DIVIDE BETWEEN THE RICH AND THE POOR!
The rich need to change their stereotype that the poor are lazy and don’t deserve help.
The poor shouldn’t have to rely on charity for help. The Poor Law and the church should have helped!
The poor deserve fair working conditions and fair pay!

6. Dickens used Fezziwig as a message to change working conditions
There should be no social divide between the rich and the poor  as an employer you should care for the poor as if they are part of your family and as if they are the same as you.
Be generous.
Don’t punish your workers, instead by being kind it will make them work just as hard.

How does dickens present Fezziwig?
Dickens presents Fezziwig as a kind and generous character through his deliberate repetition of “in came”. This repetition stresses how Fezziwig lets in anyone and everyone into his Christmas Eve party from the “baker’s son” to “boy down the street”. Fezziwig’s ability to let anyone into his party reveals how he doesn’t care what social class or background you come from, you deserve to be involved in the Christmas celebrations. Furthermore, it highlights how Fezziwig doesn’t mind who eats his food or indulges in his “plenty of beer” because he unlike Scrooge he is not a miser and freely gives to anyone who wants to attend his party. Perhaps Dickens uses Fezziwig’s as an amiable character who gives in an overly generous way as a strategy to try and change the terrible working conditions in the Victorian Times. This is because by showing Fezziwig as a generous boss to his workers and the public, it is a message to the cruel bosses of that time that they do not need to punish their workers, instead they should treat everyone equally and eradicate the social divide between the rich and the poor. The emphasis on letting everyone into the party would encourage his Victorian reader to feel guilt for mistreating the poor and it would have particularly angered a poor Victorian reader because Dickens is showing them that they can have a pleasant workplace and that the torturous working conditions don’t need to happen.
