Why Invest the Time Liu Discusses what you’re missing when you don’t stay active Get regular support through posting Show your expertise by self publishing Increase recruiter visibility Miss keeping your profile up to date Keep you brand fresh with regular updates While many people have heard that networking is something important, they may not understand what the benefits are. Since networking can take effort, if people don’t understand the benefits, they may not invest the time to do it successfully, so they may miss opportunities. In a recent article in Forbes - 5 Professional Opportunities You're Missing By Being Inactive On LinkedIn by Joseph Liu, he talks about some of the benefits of networking. I want to discuss these benefits with you and think about how they could help you in your own career. Understanding the benefits can help in both having the motivation to make it prioritiy, as well as thinking about how to use it successfully. When you have a problem to solve, need a candidate, or want feedback on an idea, posting allows you to quickly connect to others out in the market Liu talks about how self publishing lets you show others what you know. However, personally, I find that doing the research you need to write helps motivate you to stay up to date in your field. Whether you pickup a new job later because you’re an expert, or just are able to perform better because you are learning about better techniques, you win by putting in the effort You can signal to recruiters silently that you would be open to something new by turning on the Open Candidate option. This means if something comes along that fits well, recruiters know you would be open to possibilities If you need to look for something new, you’re going to need an up to date resume. Staying active on LinkedIn, and updating your profile regularly, let’s you keep the notes you’ll need later on if you do need to look for something new. LinkedIn let’s you show your expertise, but also regular updates reminds people who you are and what you know. When people think of someone for a problem, your name is more apt to come to mind. As I mentioned at the beginning, networking takes time and effort. Understanding the benefits can help individuals both have the motivation to invest the time, as well as think about what they want to do to gain those benefits. Now that you understand these benefits better. I want each of you to sit down now, think about a goal of what you want to gain from networking, such as learning about a new field or connecting with a key member in an area, and then create a plan of how to reach your goal. By doing so, you can start to see how to use LinkedIn more effectively to see real results.

Show Who You Are Add Details Show your Expertise Show your Personality
Not Everything Fits on a Resume Talk About What Makes you Different Show your Expertise Join Related Groups Highlight Articles Show your Personality Use Pictures or Visualizations Think About Style Hobbies or Volunteer Laura Shin gives somes ideas about using the LinkedIn to profile who you are The first one is having more space to show off. Details that don’t fit on a resume work well here. It let’s you set yourself apart with some of the details. It’s also an opportunity to talk about how you’re an expert in your field. Joining related groups will show that you take an interest in learning about what others are doing in the field. As we mentioned before, self publishing keeps you up to date in your field. Sharing them lets others see that expertise. Also – LinkedIn gives you freedom to add color or graphics that normally wouldn’t appear on a resume. You still want to be professional, but you can show how you can be interesting as well. That style, whether straight laced and conservative, or creative and fun loving, ,comes across in your designs. Also, mentioning hobbies or volunteer work lets people know about who you are outside of the office. Reference -

Connect With Others Start with Who you Know Reach Out
Friends / Business Connections Anyone to Stay in Contact Reach Out Think about Who and Why Make it Personal Use Introduce Me Follow Key People Once you get a good profile set up, you want to start connecting with others. Shin suggests by starting with the people you know, such as friends or the people you work wiith. But you can also use it to keep contacts with people you may lose otherwise. It’s a good place to add those people you meet in conferences or other areas where you want to keep in touch. The next step is to reach out to others. The starting point should be understand who you want to connect to and why. DO you think they would have good advice, they would be hiring later, or would help to guide you? You should have a reason for connecting. If you think they can benefit from the connection, you can send them a message with an introduction and why you would like to connect, or if you have someone who you know well, you can ask them to introduce you. For high profile people that you’re interested in, you can also follow.

Find Out What’s Out There
Stay Active Pay Attention to Posts Follow Key People Read Articles Use your Connections Find out about Companies Find out about Fields Learn about Specific People There are a number of ways to use LinkedIn to learn. We spoke earlier about using it for motivation to learn a new field, but you can also use it to keep up to date in your field. If you’re in Sales, you can join the Sales group and then listen to what others are saying about difficult issues and how they solve them. You’ve followed famous people you’re interested in, take time to read what they post. You can also keep up by looking at the key articles others are sharing One of the best ways to use the site is to do research. You can use your connections to see what a company is like, what others like about it, and what is the key of the culture. You can learn about fields you’re interested in. And if you’re hiring, if someone has worked with the person before
