Chapter 6- Greek Religion

Greek Religion The Greeks didn’t understand why things happened with their environment, so they blamed those things on the powers of spirits.

Greek Religion Over time, storytellers came up many stories, called myths, to explain all the things that they couldn’t figure out. Some examples are

Greek Religion Why did people suffer? Why did they die?
What happened to them after they stopped breathing?

Hesiod Hesiod was a poet of the eighth century B.C.E. He wrote a looooong called Theogony that summed up all the myths of his time.

Why did Hesiod write it? To bring the gods together.

The Creation The geeks believed that there was just Chaos. Out of Chaos Mother Earth popped up. Then came Uranus. A huge Ocean wrapped around her. They also thought that the world was flat with the underworld under it.

The Creation Chaos- the time of only confusion Mother Earth- the earth
Uranus- the sky Ocean- the huge sea surrounding Mother Earth

The Titans The Titans were the children of Gaea and Uranus. Hyperion, the sun god. Phoebe, the goddess of moon. Cronos was the most powerful titan and he was Mother Earth’s favorite . The titans were the favorites of Uranus. When Mother Earth gave birth to the Cyclops, Uranus was upset to see such ugly creatures walking on Mother Earth so he banned them to Tartus.

The Titans When Rhea was about to have Zeus, she cleverly wrapped a stone in blankets and gave it to Cronus. He contentedly swallowed the stone while the nymphs took care of Zeus.

The Titans When Zeus was a full grown man, he worked in the court. This enabled him to mix up a potion that would make Cronus very sick. When Cronus drank the potion, he got so sick that he threw up the other five gods Poseidon, Hades, Demeter, Hestia, and Hera. Together they defeated Cronus and they became the olympians.

The Olympians The three brothers divided up Cronus’s powers.

The Olympians Hera- wife of Zeus and protectress of wives

The Olympians Athena- goddess of combat and wisdom

The Olympians Demeter- goddess of the harvest and fertility

The Olympians Hestia- goddess of the hearth

The Olympians Artemis- goddess of the hunt

The Olympians Apollo- god of music and light

The Olympians Aphrodite- goddess of love and beauty and wife of Hephaestus

The Olympians Hephaestus- god of metalworking

The Olympians Ares- god of war

The Olympians Hermes- Zeus’s messenger and god of mischief
