4 What is a Preposition? A preposition is a joining word that shows relationship between things in a sentence Example: The car skidded around the corner.

5 Common Prepositions: against along among around about above across
at in of on to by for off out up down from past since with through against along among around about above across after behind below beneath beside between beyond before during onto outside over toward under until upon without

6 Where is a preposition located in a sentence?
A preposition is a word that comes at the beginning of a short group of words called a prepositional phrase. Prepositional phrases always follow the same pattern: they always begin with a preposition and end with a noun, an adjective + noun, or a pronoun A preposition is never followed by a verb

7 Here are some examples:
in the basket over the mountain beside the wooden fence with the baseball cap of the students on the map into the city among the general population

8 A preposition followed by a noun:
at the ____________ on my desk over the fence in the ____________

9 A preposition followed by adjective(s) + noun:
into the _______________ between the yellow taxis beneath the dark, cloudy sky along the twisting, hilly road

10 A preposition followed by a pronoun:
to __________ by him for __________ without her the car (in the driveway) is (for her).

11 Your turn… Circle the preposition
Draw an arrow to the noun or pronoun that follows it Examples: The dog ran into the garage. The mouse scampered under the big desk.

12 The airplane soared above the people on the hiking trail.
The large eagle suddenly pounced on the unsuspecting rabbit When the hikers reached the end of the trail, they pitched their tents by the shore. White puffy clouds could be seen on the horizon.

13 The campers sat on the rocks and watched the sunset.
Behind the trees, a rustling sound could be heard. A black bear wandered into the campsite. The campers sitting behind the tent jumped to their feet

14 Immediately they grabbed pots and pans from the packs and began banging them together.
The bear turned quickly and fled into the woods. After their supper, they cleaned up and watched for him. The campers were startled by the unexpected visitor and decided to dangle the food pack from a high tree branch.

15 What preposition could you use to fill in the blank?
