Metaphor…a metaphor compares two unlike things without using a comparison word (such as like or as), as in this line that uses a cattle stampede to represent a flooded river.
The swollen river stampedes past.
(Compares a river to a herd of “stampeding” cattle)

Personification…treats a non-human subject as if it were a person.
Puddles beg me to stop and play.
The house squatted on top of the hill, gazing menacingly down at me.

4. Remember Tone and Mood…
Tone… is the writer’s attitude toward or feelings about his or her subject (angry, humorous, etc.)
Mood…is the feeling or emotion a piece of literature or writing creates in a reader

5. …and… A Simile compares two unlike things with the word like or as.
Dry earth cracked like a jigsaw puzzle.
Her face is as dazzling as the sunrise.

Alliteration…is the repetition of consonant sounds at the beginning of words.
The wicked wind laughs long and loud.

7. …and… Onomatopoeia…is the use of words that sound like what they name.
