History Aristotle (384-322 BC)
- Greek philosopher who developed the 1st method of classification. - It was very simple & based on 2 groups: Plants & Animals.

History 2. Linnaeus ( ) – Swedish botanist who developed a system of classification based on physical characteristics & close relationships of organisms. - It is still used today.

Binomial Nomenclature
A 2 word system used to identify species; invented by Linnaeus. The 1st word is the Genus & the 2nd word is the Epithet. Ex. Homo sapiens How Are Living Things are Classified? From largest to smallest.

Kingdom – group of related phyla Phylum – group of related classes Class – group of related orders Order – group of related families Family – group of related genera Genus – group of related species Species – population of interbreeding organisms capable of producing fertile offspring.

These names are given in Latin because
it is no longer spoken & so it will never change. Common Names can be very misleading & organisms can have more than one common name. Ex: Sea Horse – Is it really related to a horse?
