Figure 1 Interactions between the enteric flora and luminal contents in the pathogenesis of symptoms in IBS. Disturbances in the enteric flora (microbiota) in the form of SIBO or qualitative changes in the colonic flora interact with luminal carbohydrates (aggravated in conditions of carbohydrate malabsorption or maldigestion) to lead to increased bacterial fermentation and gas production. This in turn affects gut physiology by delaying gastric emptying and small-bowel transit.
