1 Eukaryotic Cells

2 Plasma Membrane (Cell Membrane)
Outer boundary of cell Protects the cell Controls what enters and leaves the cell Maintains Homeostasis “steady state”

3 Plasma Membrane Phospholipid bilayer (nonpolar)
Membrane proteins – act as transport channels Carbohydrate chains –act as “ID” tags for the cell Cholesterol – provides stability for the membrane

4 Cell Wall Only found in plant cells Adds protection and support
Made of cellulose. Allows water and dissolved substances to pass through.

5 The Nucleus Controls most activities in the cell
Contains all genetic information in the form of DNA.

6 Cytoplasm Clear fluid within cell that contains all organelles
Moves materials throughout the cell

7 Endoplasmic Reticulum
Series of folded membranes that form sacs or tubes Rough ER has ribosomes attached

8 Ribosomes Transports materials between the cytoplasm and nucleus
Makes proteins in the cell May be free in cytoplasm or attached to ER Proteins are vital to life- all cells must produce them

9 Golgi Bodies Saclike membranes used for storing/ packaging of chemicals Cells that make saliva or mucus have many Golgi bodies

10 Mitochondria Energy producers Powerhouse of the cell Sausage-shaped
Has its own DNA Many mitochondria in muscle cells

11 Plastids Only found in plants/ algae Contain food or pigments
Leucoplasts store food Chloroplasts contain the pigment chlorophyll

12 Vacuoles Store food, water, or waste materials
Plant cells have large vacuoles

13 Lysosomes Found in Golgi bodies
Contain digestive enzymes to digest unwanted particles Help white blood cells to destroy bacteria
