Room 23 April 3-7, 2017 Language Arts Important Dates: Word Study
This week we continued in our theme, Look at my Garden Grow! Throughout this theme, we had many discussions about how to grow and take care of a garden and plants in a garden. We continued practicing main idea with the story, How to Grow a Sunflower. We read the poem, Other Lands, and put ourselves in the character’s shoes while we closed our eyes and made mental images. O ur vocabulary words this week were: finished, seedling, roots Word Study This week we practiced compound words. We learned and practiced compound words by taking two smaller words and turning them into one big word. We practiced adding and taking away letters to form new words. We added new words to our word wall. minus, picnic, demand, sunset, cannot, frozen Please practice these at home! Please make sure you are reviewing our phonics skills at home. Spelling is becoming much harder for some students. Important Dates: April 10-17th: Spring Break/No School April 18th: Tye Dying Parent volunteers arrive at 1:35pm April 19th: Publishing center permission forms due April 19th-21st: SAGES tests May 3rd: Field trip to Philadelphia Zoo Reminders Weekly reports to be signed and returned Tuesday*. **Please make sure your child is reading at least 10-15 minutes every night, or at least some nights(!), either independently or with an adult! Lunch Menu (Week we Get back) Alternates for the week:
Social Studies We started our new unit, Africa! Students completed a KWL chart. We talked about what some students already knew and what students wanted to learn about Africa. We also watched the video, African-American Heritage, and learned about Africa’s culture. Science This week we wrapped up our recycling unit by reading/watching the original Lorax. Students used their imaginations to create their own machine that would better the environment. They also wrote what they would do if they had the last truffula tree and how they could help the trees. Math We continued working in chapters 13 & 17, Addition and Subtraction to 40 & 100. We started subtraction with and without grouping this week. Regrouping is a difficult concept for some students, so please also practice this at home. If you have the time, please practice double digit addition and subtraction, with and without regrouping, over spring break.
