4 Menial (adj) Of or relating to low-level humble work
Desperate to make money, Oliver accepted menial work with low pay.

5 Permanent (adj) Lasting or expected to last for a long time.
Unfortunately, the tattoo was permanent.

6 respite (noun) A period of rest; a pause.
The rain brought a welcomed respite from the tremendous heat.

7 strenuous (adj) Needing much effort; using a lot of energy.
The kids thought cleaning the house was extremely strenuous. Very active; vigorous. The kids gave a strenuous objection when asked to do chores without getting an allowance.

8 toil (verb/noun) To work hard and long
Children in other countries are forced to toil all day long. To make one’s way with difficulty. The young boys toiled using only a carpet knife. (noun) Hard and tiring labor. The young boy worked seven years before receiving a respite from his toil.

9 Urgent (adj) Urgency (noun)
The need for quick action. I don’t care for germs, but I’ll use the porta- potties in cases of urgency. Needing quick action or attention. There are porta-potties on the beach for those who have an urgent need to go.

10 Making connections What kind of menial work have you performed?
What kinds of things are you glad aren’t permanent? What do you think your parents could use a respite from? Have you ever given a strenuous objection to something? Where do you think you toil the most? What is something that you would consider urgent?
