Agenda 1/31 Warm Up Osmosis Lab Data Collection Lab Data Analysis
Turn in: Video Notes Homework: Finish lab report
2
Warm Up Write a dramatic explanation for what will happen if a cell is placed in a hypertonic solution and why.
3
Osmosis Lab Whoops! Ms. Poole forgot to label her solutions. Classic Ms. Poole… It is now up to you to help her label the appropriate solution with its correct concentration. How could we do this?
4
Osmosis Lab 1. Obtain 3 mystery solutions
2. Record the initial mass of your potato core 3. Place potato core in mystery solution and wait 30 minutes 4. Record final mass of your potato core 5. Calculate percent change 6. Analyze data
5
Predictions What does it mean if the potato core gains mass?
What does it mean if the potato core loses mass? What does it mean if the potato core’s mass doesn’t change
6
Predictions If the mystery solutions have concentrations of 0 M, 0.2M, 0.4M, 0.6M, 0.8M, and 1.0M sucrose How can we determine which solutions are hypo/hyper? How can we determine the concentration identify of these mystery solutions?
7
While we wait…. Write your introduction and methods Hypothesis:
Explain why the potato cell would (or would not) change size
8
Now… Measure final mass
Calculate change in mass and percent change in mass Determine the concentration of mystery solutions Write a detailed paragraph in your lab report that summarizes how you determined that order
