Carl Sagan Sagan was an American scientist specializing in astronomy, cosmology, physics, and biology. He was Jewish and had family members who survived the Holocaust.

Carl Sagan Sagan was known for being a “Science Communicator” which means that his personal mission was to make sure that the general population knew something about important scientific concepts. In 1980, Carl Sagan presented a television documentary called “Cosmos” in which he explained scientific aspects of the universe in a way that the general public could understand.

The Battle of Gettysburg
The Battle of Gettysburg was fought in Pennsylvania in 1863, and was considered the turning point of the Civil War. The Civil War was fought between the Union (Northern States) and the Confederacy (seceded Southern States) about sectionalism and state rights vs. federal rights.

About 50,000 people (from both sides) died during this one battle. The battle took place over three days. Four months after the battle, President Lincoln made “The Gettysburg Address” which discussed the idea of equality, and maintaining national order.

Vocabulary Words for Sagan’s Speech
Blockbuster: The largest “conventional” bomb used during World War Two. They were used by the Royal Air Force (UK) and were capable of destroying entire buildings and city blocks. Civilian Casualty: A citizen (who is not in the military) that dies as a result of war. Atomic Bomb: Came before the Hydrogen Bomb (nuclear bomb). This was the kind of bomb we used in Japan during WWII.
