1 1. 2. Corn, Beans, and Squash were the most important crops to this group of Native Americans 3. Discovered in 1895 on the banks of the Duck River in Humphreys County, Tennessee. Placed in a burial mound together with human bones, decorative axe’s, spears, and jewelry. Turtle Shell sealed with pine and tar and filled with stones. The type of turtle is native to the Gulf of Mexico but this artifact was discovered in Ohio.

The largest of the Mississippian Mounds was found in Cahokia, Illinois. It had about 40,000 people. Cahokia had over 100 mounds. Some were conical to bury their dead. Some were platform mounds for homes of the chiefs. Religious ceremonies were held at the temples at the tops of the mounds. Some families had small mounds where they buried their dead. "Grave goods" would be buried with them.

Mesa Verde National Park. Entire village carved out of a cliff in Colorado. The walls were of sun dried brick.

5 4. This Native American group captured rainfall run-off from the mesa tops surrounding the canyon system, especially after heavy summer storms.

6 1. Harpoon spear made of ivory (possibly that of a walrus)

7 2. 3. 4. Beaded amautik or women's parka. This parka, which has many tears and losses, was recently treated in the conservation lab. The parka is made of caribou skin and is elaborately decorated with beadwork sewn onto heavy wool panels.
