Reading & Evaluating ALGEBRAIC eXPRESSIONS
2
Write an algebraic expression for the following trick:
Take the month number from your birthday (January = 1, February = 2, etc.) Multiply that by 5 Then add 6 Then multiply that total by 4 Then add 9 Then multiply this total by 5 once again Add to that total the day in which you were born (If you were born on the 18th, you add 18) Finally, subtract 165 You should end with the month and day you were born!!

4
Let’s get up and move There are six pieces of paper taped around the room You are going to walk around the room to each piece of paper and write key words that may be associated with the different symbols drawn on the page. + - * ÷ = ( )
5
Find an algebraic expression that represents each statement
Three times a number minus seven --- A number minus seven, then multiplied by three --- A shirt originally cost c dollars and is on sale for 60% of the original cost --- The total number of hours worked during d days for persons working seven hours each day --- Total amount of pay for working h hours at a wage of $7.25 per hour ---
6
Find an algebraic expression that represents each statement
Three times a number minus seven x - 7 A number minus seven, then multiplied by three --- 3(x – 7) A shirt originally cost c dollars and is on sale for 60% of the original cost --- $0.6c The total number of hours worked during d days for persons working seven hours each day --- 7d Total amount of pay for working h hours at a wage of $7.25 per hour --- $7.25h
7
Are these expressions equivalent?
How can you check? Evaluating the expressions by substituting in the same number on both sides Symbolic manipulation
8
I have/who has As I give you a card, read the expression on the bottom of the card. Turn the verbal expression into an algebraic expression (**make sure to simplify)
