Areas Where Endemic CHIKV Transmission Overlaps with ONNV Vector Habitation
Mosquito vectors are regularly exposed to diverse pathogens during human blood meals. Given the high genetic similarity between CHIKV and ONNV, as well as the wide area of overlap of CHIKV local transmission and ONNV Anopheline vectors A. gambiae and A. funestus habitation, it is theoretically possible that a vector shift of CHIKV to Anopheles could occur. If this transpires, it would provide more opportunity for CHIKV spread, as ONNV vectors reside beyond regions of current CHIKV prevalence.
