Democracy A type of government where the people have the power
The people make the decisions and vote on the issues Ancient Athens, Greece was a democracy Only men could vote, but they met together and ran the government
4
Republic A type of government where the people have the power, but elect officials to run the government The people do not vote on every issue, but the elected officials who do vote on these issues represent the people. Ancient Rome was a republic with senators who represented the citizens
5
Dictatorship A type of government where a single person or a small group of people have complete control The people do not have any power or say in the government at all. Saddam Hussein was the dictator in Iraq.
6
Monarchy A type of government where the monarch, normally a king or queen, controls the government The power is passed down from parents to their children and they rule for life. Many European countries have had kings for thousands of years
7
Government A This government has a president who is elected every four years by the people. The president is the head of the government and the head of the state. The people, 18 and older, also elect senators to represent them in the government. Which type of government is this?

Government B The kingdom is divided into 13 regions called governorates, each of which is headed by a prince-governor, or emir, who answers directly to the King who is also prime minister. He is head of state and head of government and rules with a Council of Ministers. The king, crown prince, and Council of Ministers established all laws prior to 1992, when the king issued a new “system of governance,” the first written body of law the kingdom has had. These new laws changed the country's political structure and guaranteed citizens a number of basic rights. The Qur'an remains the country's official “constitution.” Which type of government is this?

Government C The leader was officially elected in 1998 as the general secretary of the ruling Workers' Party of Korea. He does not hold the title of “president,”. An appointed premier is technically head of government. The 687-seat Supreme People's Assembly forms the legislature, but it has very little real power. When elections are held, only a single candidate runs for each office. The candidates are nominated by the Workers' Party. Voters can only vote “yes” or “no” for each person, and they generally vote “yes.” Voting is seen as a demonstration of political activity, rather than part of a competitive democracy. The voting age is 17 and turnout usually is reported as 100 percent. Which type of government is this?

Government D The president is directly elected, serving as head of state and executive head of government for a five-year term. The president appoints a prime minister from the majority party in the National Assembly and has the right to dissolve the Assembly to call for new elections. The president has no veto power but can rule by emergency decree in a crisis. The National Assembly's 577 members are elected for five-year terms. The Senate's 331 members serve six-year terms. One-third of its members are indirectly elected every three years. The voting age is 18. Which type of government is this?

Government E Everyone over 18 can vote. Everyone votes on the different laws and issues that come up. There are meetings every week to discuss these issues. Each person is able to vote one time for each issue. Which type of government is this?
