Preparing parents and students for senior year and post-secondary success. School Counselors: Kristy Carter Kimberly Davis Cheryl Williams Welcome to Junior Parent Night. I am very excited to see you all here this evening. I look forward to guiding you through the post-secondary planning activities that take place during the senior year of high school in preparation for the year following high school.

Planning ahead for a successful senior year Credits Required for Graduation
English- 4 Credits Math- 4 Credits Social Studies- 4 Credits Science- 3 Credits Health and PE- 1 Credit 2 Units in a specific Dept. (CTE, Foreign Language or Arts) Electives- 10 Credits Total: 28 Credits required for graduation College admissions officers look for advanced classes in academic core areas and elective choices that show an interest in their future studies; students should take a reasonable amount of AP classes if appropriate; and minimize early dismissal/late arrival and TA choices

Core academic courses Coursework beyond minimum college entrance requirements Advanced classes/course studies Elective classes in areas of interest Career and Technical Education Center- Gina Bader College admissions officers look for advanced classes in academic core areas and elective choices that show an interest in their future studies; students should take a reasonable amount of AP classes if appropriate; and minimize early dismissal/late arrival and TA choices

Sign up for College Entrance Exams Planning ahead for a successful senior year SAT Reasoning Test – collegeboard.org ACT - act.org *All Juniors will take the ACT at school for free on February 27, 2018. Both are tests of college readiness SAT is recommended spring of junior year- May 5, 2018 Register by April 6th to avoid late fees! If your student has an IEP or 504 and would like to request testing modifications they must do that at least 7 weeks prior to testing. See Mrs. Carter for more information.

ACT- Feb. 27th English Mathematics Reading Science Optional Writing Test Subtests range from 1-36 Composite of 4 test scores (1-36) No penalty for guessing Redesigned SAT- May 5th Evidenced-Based Reading and Writing Mathematics Essay (optional) Subtests Score range from Possible Score Range No penalty for guessing

BUILD A LIST OF SCHOOLS/PROGRAMS TO RESEARCH Naviance has some great tools for this; College Supermatch and Check out CFNC. org Gather information about: Location Size Admissions Requirements – typical test scores/GPA Academic Offerings – majors/programs (Look for schools with a good range of programs in an area of interest) Expenses – tuition, travel to/from school Financial Aid Housing Campus Visits

Plan College Visits Walk around campus Attend a class Interview admissions officers Talk with other university students Eat a meal in one of the dining halls Think about Letters of Recommendation Ask someone who knows you well Choose teachers of classes where the student was most engaged intellectually, showed creativity, or completed a special project or independent work Talk to the writer about your dreams for college and a career Have a resume prepared and complete Brag Sheet
