Excretory System
2
Of the Excretory System
Primary Function Of the Excretory System To rid the body of liquid wastes and maintain a even balances of electrolytes in the body.
3
What goes in Must Come Out
The Excretory System is the system of an organism's body that excretes. Various parts of the body are responsible for this, which includes: Sweat glands, lungs, liver and kidneys Accumulated wastes cause damage to the body.
4
What goes in Must Come Out
5
Electrolytes? In humans, electrolyte homeostasis is regulated by hormones Muscles and neurons are activated by electrolyte activity Electrolytes regulate hydration and blood pH in the body Examples: sodium(Na+), potassium (K+), calcium (Ca2+), magnesium (Mg2+), chloride (Cl−), hydrogen phosphate (HPO42−), and hydrogen carbonate (HCO3−)
6
Hey, no sweat! Sweating is primarily a means of thermoregulation.
Sweat contain mainly water, salts, wastes, and lactic acid while carrying heat out to be evaporated. Did you know? On a hot day, it is possible to lose up to 7 liters of body water by sweating
7
Take a Breather Lungs are part of the respiratory system and are responsible for breathing Lungs DO NOT change Oxygen into Carbon dioxide They take in oxygen to take to the blood and send out the carbon dioxide. Did you know? The average pair of human lungs can hold about 6 liters of air
8
Mmmmm… Liver One of the most important organs in the body is the liver
It’s digestive function is to produce bile which breakdown and absorb fats. It can detoxify drugs and alcohol and destroy some bacteria in the blood. Did you know? The liver is the largest gland and second largest organ in the body and is one of the few organs that can regenerate
10
Did you know? Your blood passes through the kidneys 300 times a day.
Gee Wizz... The main organs in the excretory system are the kidneys The purpose of the kidney is to cleanse the blood The waste taken from the blood is known as urine Did you know? Your blood passes through the kidneys 300 times a day.
12
NePhrons (emphasis on the pee)
Kidneys contain over a million structures known as nephrons. Nephrons are responsible for the formation of urine. Its 3 functions include filtration, reabsorption, and secretion. Did you know? The nephrons clean all your blood in 45 minutes.
14
Filtration: cells and large proteins are filtered from the blood to make a liquid that will eventually become urine. Reabsorption: the transport of good molecules from this liquid back into the blood. Secretion: molecules are transported in the opposite direction, from the blood into the urine
15
Anatomy 2 Kidneys- Remove liquid from the blood in the form of urine. Keep a stable balance of electrolytes. 2 Ureters-Force the urine downward away from the kidney. Bladder- Store the urine to be released Urethra- Tube that allows urine to pass outside the body.
17
Where does it go then? Urine is sent to the bladder through the ureters. It is then expelled from the body through the urethra The process of releasing urine is known as urination. Urine is composed of: 95% water 5% other 1.5 quarts per day Did you know? Every day the nephrons send about six cups of urine to the bladder.
