1
Describe the scientific theory of cells (cell theory), and relate the history of its discovery to the process of science. SC.912.L.14.1
2
BELLRINGER The cell theory was first proposed in Evidence obtained through additional scientific investigations resulted in the current cell theory. Which statement describes a component of the original cell theory that was removed because of the new scientific knowledge? A. All living things are made of cells. B. All cells come from other preexisting cells. C. Cells form through spontaneous generation. D. Cells are the basic structural and functional units of life.

Interactive Journal Entry
Left Side Right Side Guided Notes (Note: when copying reduce size to 67% to fit in composition books; students can staple/tape it in landscape format) Cell Theory Graphic Organizer
4
“I Do” What is a scientific theory?
A scientific theory summarizes a hypothesis or group of hypotheses that have been supported with repeated testing. 1-2 minutes
5
“I Do” What is A scientific theory?”
Any scientific theory must be based on a careful and rational examination of the facts. In the scientific method, there is a clear distinction between facts, which can be observed and/or measured, and theories, which are scientists’ explanations and interpretations of the facts. 1-2 minutes
6
The Cell Theory states: All living things are composed of cells.
“I Do” Cell theory The Cell Theory states: All living things are composed of cells. Cells are the basic units of structure and function in living things. All cells are produced from other cells. 1-2 minutes

“We Do”

“We Do” Interactive Journal – LH Page
Complete the table below 8-10 min As students review the article they should record information from article in their class-made journals using the graphic organizer provided.

“You DO” – Exit slip questions
The following questions can be projected when an instructor reaches the “You Do” or an instructor can use the handout.
12
Exit Slip 1. In the 1830s, Theodor Schwann showed that the mature tissues of animals were traceable to embryonic cells. For which of the following statements of cell theory does this provide evidence? A. All living things are made from cells. B. Cells are the basic units of structure and function in an organism. C. All cells come from preexisting cells. D. Each cell has a specific design and purpose. 1-3 minutes
13
Exit Slip 2. Cell Theory is one of the fundamental tenets of biology. Which of the following observations support the current Cell Theory? A. Muscle fibers contain many nuclei. B. Stems cells can spontaneously generate. C. Mature red blood cells do not contain a nucleus. D. Cells from a multi-cellular organism can be grown in isolation, separate from the organism. 1-3 minutes
14
Exit Slip 3. According to Cell Theory, which of the following best describes the role of cells in living organisms? A. Cells join together to form multicellular organisms. B. Cells are the basic operating units of living organisms. C. Cells make up the soft portions of tissues in living organisms. D. Cells are responsible for coordinating activities in multicellular organisms. 1-3 minutes
