6. What’s a topic sentence?

7. A topic sentence is the sentence that clearly identifies the main idea in each paragraph. It controls the focus of the paragraph. It is usually, but not always, the first or second sentence within a paragraph.

8. The following are weak topic sentences:
Canada shares a border with the United States.
Too narrow. A fact cannot be a topic sentence because it does not contain an idea that can be developed.

Too broad. This sentence needs to be more specific. Studying what? Difficult for whom?
