Ravenstein's 5 Rules Net Migration amounts to only a fraction of the gross migration between 2 places. The majority of migrants move short distances. Migrants who move longer distances tend to choose big city destinations. Urban residents are less migratory than people in rural areas. Families are less likely to make international moves than young adults.

Push & Pull Factors People migrate for economic, cultural and environmental reasons. Push factors Push people away from a location Hazardous weather conditions may push someone from a location. Forced international migration Pull Factors Lure people to a location A new Job or nice weather may entice someone to move.

Intervening Obstacles
Migrants don't always go where they want to go because of intervening obstacles. An intervening obstacle is an environmental or cultural feature preventing migrants from moving

Permanent movement within same country. International Migration Permanent movement outside the country. Interregional Migration Movement from region in the country to another. Intraregional Migration Movement within one region. Intercontinental Migration Migration flow involving movement across international borders.

Chain Migration The social process by which immigrants from a particular town follow one another to a different city. For example Bob's crush moves, so Bob follows and then Bob's mom moves because she misses her baby. Forced Migration A migrant is forced to move, they have no choice in the matter. Rural Urban Migration Moving from a rural to urban area. Voluntary Migration Moving willingly.
