Review the location and functions of the organs of the male and female reproductive systems. Describe some common disorders and conditions of the male reproductive system.

3 Objectives Describe some common disorders and conditions of the female reproductive system. List six diagnostic tests associated with conditions of the male and female reproductive systems.

4 Objectives Describe nursing assistant actions related to the care of patients with conditions and diseases of the reproductive system. State the nursing precautions required for patients who have sexually transmitted diseases.

5 Structure and Function
Both the male and female reproductive organs have dual functions: Produce reproductive cells Produce hormones that are responsible for sex characteristics

Testes Epididymis Vas deferens Seminal vesicles Ejaculatory duct Prostate gland Cowper’s glands Penis

7 Female Reproductive Organs: Structure and Function
External female structures include the: Vulva Clitoris Urinary meatus Vaginal meatus

Internal female reproductive organs include the: Ovaries Fallopian tubes Uterus Vagina

9 Conditions of the Male Reproductive Organs
Male reproductive organs are subject to the same kinds of disease processes that affect other body parts. Examples of these conditions are tumors and infections.

A very common problem experienced by many men Involves the prostate gland

Like the male organs Female reproductive organs are subject to disease processes Including tumors and infections, that affect other body parts

12 Sexually Transmitted Disease (STD)
Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) Affect both men and women Most STDs can be treated and cured But patients do not develop immunity to repeated infections

13 Vaginal Douche Vaginal douche
Irrigation of the vagina with fluid or medication It is done by a physician’s order
