Kamakura Period 1192 C.E., Minamoto Yoritomo was appointed shogun and established a new government, the Kamakura Bakufu Minamoto died in 1199 and created a power vacuum between Kamakura and Kyoto Emperor basically loses all power.

Kamakura Period Leading social order is samurai Zen introduced (1191)
Heavy reliance on the military to fend off the Mongols broke the government and redistributed power 1333, Emperor Go-Daigo restores imperial power.

Muromachi Period Emperor Go-Daigo was ousted to the south of Kyoto by 1336. Ashikaga Takauji appointed himself shogun and established government in Muromachi district of Kyoto Ashikaga Yoshimitsu ( ) as shogun ruled during a period of bloody civil wars. 1573, end of period
