1 Major Crush: a Solitary Fibrous Pleural Tumor
Ami Schattner, MD, Nadia Sokolovski, MD, Edward Altman, MD, Meital Adi, MD  The American Journal of Medicine  Volume 126, Issue 8, Pages (August 2013) DOI: /j.amjmed Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Inc. Terms and Conditions

2 Figure 1 A chest x-ray, shown here in the posteroanterior view, disclosed a huge mass that occupied the anterior half of the patient's right hemithorax and abutted the right heart border. The American Journal of Medicine  , DOI: ( /j.amjmed ) Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Inc. Terms and Conditions

3 Figure 2 The presence of a sizable well-defined heterogeneous mass (black arrows) on the anterior pleural surface of the right hemithorax was confirmed by contrast-enhanced computed tomography of the chest in an axial view. The tumor was causing deviation of the mediastinal structures posteriorly and to the left, as well as marked compression of the superior vena cava (white arrow), right pulmonary artery (curved white arrow), and trachea (curved black arrow). 4 Figure 3 When viewed under the microscope, the biopsy sample showed a cellular spindle cell tumor. Here, spindle-shaped tumor cells are separated by bands of hyalinized collagen and focal branching blood vessels. No mitotic figures were identified, and necrosis was absent (hematoxylin and eosin, 150X). The tumor was positive for CD34; negative for cytokeratin (not shown). 5 Figure 4 This tumor, removed at surgery, weighed more than 2.2 lb (1 kg). The American Journal of Medicine  , DOI: ( /j.amjmed ) Copyright © 2013 Elsevier Inc. Terms and Conditions
