MAJOR CHARACTERISTICS OF SUMMER
RISE IN TEMPERATURE AND FALL IN PRESSURE. IN NORTH WEST PARTS OF THE COUNTRY TEMPERATURE AROUND 48 DEGREE CELSIUS IS A COMMON PHENOMENON. STEADY INCREASE IN TEMPERATURE FROM SOUTH TO NORTH WITH HIGHEST TEMPERATURE IN THE INTERIOR. LOW PRESSURE ON LAND AND HIGH PRESSURE ON SURROUNDING SEAS . NORTH EAST READE WINDS BLOWING FROM SOUTH EAST TO NORTH WEST IN SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE ARE ATTRACTED TOWARDS INDIAN MAINLAND. – THIS MARKS THE END OF SUMMER SEASON AND THE SOUTH WEST MONSOONS SET IN THE MONTH OF JUNE.

LOCAL WINDS IN INDIA DURING THE SUMMER MONTHS
KAL BAISAKHI – ‘ CALAMITY OF BAISAKHI MONTH’ – IN WEST BENGAL THESE WINDS ARE ACCOMPANIED BY THUNDERSTORMS AND BRING RAINFALL IN APRIL – MAY WHICH IS GOOD FOR TEA CROP IN ASSAM, JUTE AND RICE IN WEST BENGAL. LOO – HOT, DRY WINDS IN MAY – JUNE, IN NORTHERN PLAINS. TEMPERATURE RISING FROM 45 TO 50 DEGREE CELSIUS MAY CAUSE HEAT STROKE AND CAN BE FATAL. MORE COMMON IN BIHAR, U.P., PUNJAB , HARYANA. MANGO SHOWERS – IN SOUTH INDIA DURING APRIL – MAY- BRING MODERATE RAIN WHICH IS USEFUL MANGO, TEA AND COFFEE CROP.
