Hello. I’m Dennis Murphy, Senior Advisor at SSV
Hello. I’m Dennis Murphy, Senior Advisor at SSV. I am here to give you a short, unscheduled, late afternoon pep talk. Stand, stretch, run in place. Do sit & be fit.
2
OK, now let’s exercise your minds.
There’s been a lot of talk in some quarters about the Multiverse and some places outside of our world with water.
3
The Overview Effect The Overview Effect is a cognitive shift in the awareness that arises during space flight. Edgar Mitchell, Apollo 14 astronaut: “You develop an instant global consciousness, a people orientation, an intense dissatisfaction with the state of the world, and a compulsion to do something about it. From out ther e on the moon, international politics look so petty. You want to grab a politician by the scruff of the neck and drag him a quarter of a million miles out and say, ‘Look at that, you son of a bitch.'”
4
Available Fresh Water The big water ball represents all the water in the world, which is a finite, fixed amount. The middle ball over Kentucky is the total amount of fresh water, including glaciers and groundwater. The small ball over Atlanta is all the available fresh water we have.
5
Water, water everywhere, but…
6
Word for the day: Evapo-transpiration!
7
If John Wesley Powell had his way, the US would be organized by watershed.
8
We are a ways away from Cadillac Desert in awareness, but much closer physically with our changing climate.
9
California Consumption: Rosenfeld Effect Needed
I would argue that one of California’s greatest accomplishments is something called the Rosenfeld Effect, where the average Californian uses half the energy of their counterparts across America. We are not there yet with water. c/o PPIC Water
10
We’ve created a Californian species whose super power is that they only use half the energy of their fellow citizens…and apparaently we’re slated to pay most of the country’s taxes, too.
11
But what can I do?
12
State & Local Policy: Yes We Can!
Efficiency programs at the local utility level Onsite & Centralized recycling and reuse Stormwater capture & management Groundwater/Aquifer remediation & recharge programs Watershed management (regional) Existing Water Storage maintenance (dredging, seismic retrofit) Delta Sustainability Urban River restoration & management And more! There is a lot to be learned from California’s Energy Efficiency story. Recognition, investment, persistence…
13
+ Public Policy Market Actions equals IMPACT
14
You are here. And we are all available to help Sisyphus.
15
With your help, we can… Stay up here
