Located in southern Europe Consists of a mainland and over 400 islands Biggest island is Crete East of Crete lies Rhodes

Mountains & hills cover 9 out every 10 acres Western Greece – Travel is difficult Little farmable land exists Eastern Greece – large plains suitable for farming

Peninsula – an area of land nearly surrounded by water Attica – wedge shaped peninsula that juts into the Mediterranean Sea. Peloponnesus – large peninsula which lies to the southwest of Attica

Land is not very fertile Made a living from the few fertile valleys & the sea Climate was challenging Summers: Hot & Dry Winters: Wet & Very Windy Fields were dry in the summer and soaked with rain in the winter

Greek farmers raised crops & animals well suited for the environment Wheat & Barley to make bread Olives & Grapes were major crops Raised sheep, goats, & cattle

Trading No large surplus of grain Travel on land was difficult
Sailing became a way of life Sailors traveled as far as Egypt to trade Olive Oil was one of the most prized exports
