This was similar to the Truman Doctrine.

9 Review Tell the person next to you: 3- new facts your learnt today
2- things you were successful in answering these questions 1- thing you need to change to ensure you get full marks

10 Source Utility East Germany Berlin Wall
Walter Ulbricht, leader of West Germany in 1960 West Germany are Nazi’s (Facists)

11 Source Utility

12 Source utility – enquiry question
This question is asking you to consider how useful the sources are for the reasons for the building of the Berlin Wall in 1961. How is utility different from reliability? Utility is about whether the source is useful – what value it has. Reliability is about whether the source can be trusted. Reliability can be brought into utility – the reliability of a source is important in making a judgement on its utility. However, utility is not part of reliability. Consider: 1) How comprehensive the sources are? Are they biased? 2) What own knowledge do you have? 3) Do they add or confirm your own knowledge Do not: Just use the sources without your own knowledge Say why they are useful nor not. Do both sides for both sources. Back up with your own knowledge. This is not a reliability question (paper 3). You are being asked to consider usefulness to an enquiry question.

13 Source Utility

14 Mark scheme Unit 3 Judgement based on simple valid criteria. EITHER
How useful are sources B and C as evidence of the reasons__________? Explain your answer using sources B and C and your own knowledge (10) 0 No rewardable material. L1/ 1–3 Judgement based on simple valid criteria. EITHER Comments based on assumed utility because source is from an eyewitness, etc. or OR Undeveloped comment on usefulness of content: subject, amount of detail contained, etc. L2/ 4-6 Judgement based on the usefulness of the sources’ information. Answers give examples of what source is useful for or its limitations. Candidates extract useful information from sources. OR Judgement based on evaluation of the nature/origin/purpose of the sources. Answers focus on how representative/reliable/authoritative the sources are. You cannot get L3 unless you support with your own knowledge. L/3 7-10 Judgement combines both elements of Level 2, assessing the contribution the sources can make to the specific enquiry.
