Dubcek wanted to reform Czechoslovakia and give more freedom of speech and less censorship of the press.
Dubcek wanted to make Communism more appealing (Socialism with a human face) and less restrictive. This meant people could travel abroad.

Czechs would not co-operate with the Soviet troops.
Dubcek was not executed. Eventually expelled from the Communist party. His fate was different to that of Nagy’s (Hungary 1956). Replaced by Husak.
Brezhnev (doctine) was trying to re-establish Soviet control over the satelite states. Force would be used whenever necessery to keep control of Soviet Satellite states. This was similar to the Truman Doctrine.

12. Source utility – enquiry question
This question is asking you to consider how useful the sources are for the reasons for the building of the Berlin Wall in 1961.
How is utility different from reliability?
Utility is about whether the source is useful – what value it has. Reliability is about whether the source can be trusted. Reliability can be brought into utility – the reliability of a source is important in making a judgement on its utility. However, utility is not part of reliability.
Consider:
1) How comprehensive the sources are? Are they biased?
2) What own knowledge do you have?
3) Do they add or confirm your own knowledge
Do not:
Just use the sources without your own knowledge
Say why they are useful nor not. Do both sides for both sources. Back up with your own knowledge.
This is not a reliability question (paper 3). You are being asked to consider usefulness to an enquiry question.
