Establishing Point of View
2
Establishing Point of View (Write these notes)
The skill used to interpret documents is H.I.P.P.O; the first P is for Point of View United States history is built around differing points of view between individuals & groups A point of view is a position or attitude that a person (or group) takes on an issue or event It can be closely related to Purpose (Second P in H.I.P.P.O) Adds depth to your analysis Helps identify patterns. Patterns can help understand causes, like why political and social groups form, and how factions grow out of those groups
3
Practicing the Skill (You do not have to write this slide)
Directions: To practice the skill of analyzing points of view, you will focus on clashes between Andrew Jackson and John C. Calhoun. In order to make this analysis, you will compare and contrast the two men’s positions according to the following prompt: Example Prompt: What events helped alienate John C. Calhoun from Andrew Jackson in the 1820s and 1830s? First, examine the chart shown on the next slide. The issue of the Tariff of Abominations has been addressed. Jackson was against tariffs in general, but would not lower them until the national debt was extinguished. Calhoun held a very strong opinion against tariffs for the reason that they did not advance southern economic development in any way.
4
Did Jackson and Calhoun support or oppose the following?
Issue Jackson’s Point of View Calhoun’s Point of View Discussion Tariff of Abominations Mildly Opposed Strongly Opposed Jackson opposed high tariffs in general, yet felt they were necessary until the national debt was paid. Calhoun believed tariffs hurt the South, and feared the growing power of central government The Market Revolution Nullification of laws Indian Removal Act Exposition and Protest Use of the Spoils System
5
Applying the Skill (You do not have to write this slide)
Directions: Copy the chart on the following slide into your HTS Workshop notes, and then complete the chart by filling in the spaces for the other five issues. Decide whether each man supported the event and/or the action it represented; or opposed the event and/or the action it represented. Also write a short statement explaining why the two men took the position they did on each item. Finally, draft a brief response to the original question: Prompt: What events helped alienate John C. Calhoun from Andrew Jackson in the 1820s and 1830s?
