Chapter 11 Section 3 Using Water Wisely

Aquifer: a body of rock or sediment that stores groundwater and allows the flow of groundwater.

Water table: the upper surface of underground water.

Water pollution: waste matter or other material that is introduced into water and that is harmful to organisms that live in, drink, or are exposed to the water.

Conservation: the preservation and wise use of natural resources.

Overdraft: when more water is pumped out of an aquifer than is replaced by rain.

The part of California that receives the most precipitation annually is north of Sacramento.

One way farmers conserve water used on crops is that farmers use drip irrigation.

Wastewater discharged from a factory, which kills fish in a nearby river, is an example of water pollution.

California gets its water from surface water, groundwater, and nearby areas.
