3 Enrolled in courses based on placement exams results in Ch, Ma, Ph, and Writing, priority as indicated on their reg forms, and seat availability – maximum 45 “academic” units Students can log into REGIS through access.caltech.edu Have conducted webinars on their schedules & academic regulations Core requirements are in the catalog on page 221 and includes a sample schedule for the first three terms on page 225.

4 Academic policies for this class:
The first two terms of freshmen year students limited to 45 units of academic courses. Students may take up to 48 units and a maximum of 51 with adviser approval with the 3-6 remaining units to be used for frontier (“pizza”) courses, PE, PA, or research. 4-Year Residence requirement and overloading limits for all students – 48 units for all students; 51 with advisor approval; over 51 units petition to the deans. Must complete 27 units/term to remain academically eligible. 2 courses used to fulfill the Advanced Humanities & Advanced Social Science requirement must be taken on grades (cannot be taken as a freshmen while on Pass/Fail). Foreign languages cannot be used to fulfill the Advanced Humanities requirement. Student must take 3 writing intensive courses - both Advanced Hums count as well as selected Advanced Social Sciences. Scientific communication class must be taken on grades. Must take Ch 3a in their first 9 terms in order to be graded p/f.

5 Last day to drop classes is November 15
Once orientation begins students can adjust their schedules using yellow drop/add card Always need advisor’s signature Need instructor signature if limited seating class (students can check REGIS or Class Schedule for these classes) Orange time conflict card – currently no freshman has a time conflict Students return signed drop/add cards to the Registrar’s Office by October 13 – last day to add classes Last day to drop classes is November 15 Need to be enrolled in a minimum of 36 units each term unless student petitions the Dean’s Office for an underload

6 New students cannot drop some courses:
Wr 001 or Wr 002 Ma 008 (Problem Solving in Calculus) students must attend the first week and do homework then the professor needs to OK any drop Any core class (Ma 1, Ph 1, Ch 1, Ch 3a, freshman HUM, etc.) without Dean’s permission Freshman Humanities – must be in two different subject areas and cannot do advanced HUMs until frosh HUMS completed (English and Philosophy; English and History, etc.). New class offerings in various subjects, not just survey courses.

7 New students cannot change some sections of courses:
Ma 001 Section 01 must enroll in Ma 001D (Series) in winter term (Math Dept will monitor) No changing of sections in Ma without the Math Department signature Recommend that students stay in Ph 001 Sections 01, 02, 09, or 10. Students in sections 09 and 10 can take second exam to try and place out of Ph 1a and into Ph 2 or Ph 12

8 Caltech Placement Exams:
Math – students already notified if they received credit for any of the Ma 1 or Ma 2 sequences and schedules have been adjusted Physics - exams taken but results not yet reported Chem – students already notified and schedules adjusted CS – students already notified and schedules adjusted Bi placement exam sometime in fall term – refer students the Bi Division (must have a 5 score on AP Biology exam)

9 Winter Term Ma & Ph practical vs. analytical tracks for Ma 1b and Ph 1b Must enroll in Ma 001D in winter term if they were in Ma 1A section 1 in fall (Math Dept will monitor) Continue with core Ma 1b, Ph 1b, Ch 1b Take Ch 3a or Ch 3x if they did not do it first term Enroll in a HUM course (different subject area) Enroll in Additional Intro Lab if not completed first term - - Ch 4a, Ph 3, Ph 8b (must also take c) If planning on Bi or BiEngr option, take Bi 8 followed by Bi 9 Problem of freshman taking advanced courses prematurely

Spring Term Continue with core Ma 1c and Ph 1c Take Ch 3a/Ch 3x if they did not do it 1st/2nd term Enroll in a HUM course (different subject area) if not completed yet Enroll in Bi 1 or Bi 1x (or continue in Bi 9 if Bi 8 taken winter term) Enroll in menu classes only offered third term (Ay 1, ESE 1, Ge 1, and IST 4) Enroll in Additional Intro Lab if not completed first or second terms (APh 24, Ch/ChE 9, Bi 10, Ph 3, Ph 8c) Will declare option in April/May of 3rd term New MS option / Ch minor / GPS minors by dept

13 Grades Pass/fail first two terms
Actual shadow grades in BOTH first and second term along w/ narrative comments (but only P/F show on their records) Third term shadow grades and comments for midterm and then all letter grades for final grades Advisor will be ed their advisees’ freshman progress reports and shadow grades

14 Eligibility (page 208 Scholastic Requirements)
Freshman are ineligible If they do not complete 27 or more units If they do not complete 108 after 3 terms of attendance After 1st two terms all students need to complete 27 units with a 1.9 GPA and complete 108 units after 3 terms of attendance As advisor you will be copied on any to freshmen who are ineligible after the term Must petition the Deans for reinstatement

15 Schedule Approval Process
Beginning winter term students will register via REGIS and you as advisor will do an online approval or request a meeting with the student Mandatory advisement in effect and students must meet at least once with advisor. Be sure to indicate on REGIS that your advisees have met with you before spring term. Adding and dropping via yellow cards with advisor signatures You can say “No”!!!

Fall Term: Bi 2, Ch 10a, CS 9, E 2, Ma 20, Ph 10 Winter Term: Ch 10b, CS 9, Ge 10 SpringTerm: Hum 80 Freshman Seminars 3 for fall term and 1 winter term 32 students requested a freshmen seminar as their first choice and were enrolled Most popular “elective” was CS 1 with 137 students requesting it as their first choice
