1 Made up of densely packed neurons we call “gray matter”
Glial Cells: support brain cells Wrinkles are called fissures.

2 Parietal Frontal Occipital Temporal

3 Frontal Lobe Deals with planning, maintaining emotional control and abstract thought. speaking (Broca’s Area) and muscle movements

4 Temporal Lobe The Temporal Lobes are located on the sides of the brain, deep to the Temporal Bones of the skull. Contains auditory cortex They play an integral role in the following functions: Hearing Organization/Comprehension of language Information Retrieval (Memory and Memory Formation)

5 Occipital Lobes In the back of our head. processing, integration, interpretation, etc. of VISION and visual stimuli. Contains visual cortex

6 Sensitivity of body parts
Find a partner Use a pencil to “draw” letters on subject’s hand and back (same size) Which body area is more sensitive? Change subject & researcher

7 Parietal Lobe It plays a major role in the following functions/actions: - Senses and integrates sensation(s) Spatial awareness and perception (Awareness of body/ body parts in space and in relation to each other) Modified from:

8 Movement and Feeling Primary Motor Cortex: An area of the brain at the back of the frontal lobe. In charge of the movement of your body parts. Opposite hemisphere – left controls right, right controls left The more intricate the movement for 1 body part, the bigger the section on the motor cortex. Somatosensory Cortex: An area of the brain behind the primary motor cortex that processes body sensations Process feeling a tickle or pain

10 Wernicke’s Area Language comprehension. Located on the Left Temporal Lobe. Wernicke’s Aphasia - Language comprehension is inhibited. Words and sentences are not clearly understood, and sentence formation may be inhibited Wernicke’s patient: It just suddenly had a feffort and all the feffort had gone with it. It even stepped my horn. They took them from earth you know. They make my favorite nine to severed and now I’m a been habed by the uh stam of fortment of my annulment which is now forever.

11 Broca’s Area Broca’s Area – Controls facial neurons, speech, and language comprehension. Located on Left Frontal Lobe. Broca’s Aphasia – Results in the decreased motor ability (or inability) to speak and form words. Broca’s patient: Alright…Uh…strong and un…I…huh tawanna guy…H…h…hot tub and…And the…Two days when uh…Hos…uh…

12 angular gyrus and basal ganglia
involved in reading aloud; receives visual information from the visual area and recodes it in auditory form, which Wernicke's area uses to derive its meaning Basal Ganglia - Tissue that connects Broca’s and Wernicke’s along the Motor Cortex (movement)

13 Association Areas - They are involved in higher mental functions such as learning, remembering, thinking and speaking. Tough to map Parietal Lobe Spatial & sensory info, language & reading functions Temporal Lobe hearing, memory, fear, speech, recognize faces Frontal Lobe responsible for complex thought – plan, predict, rationalize, judgment, creativity, inhibition (control) – still developing in teenagers! Moral Judgment

15 What is cognitive neuroscience? What is dual processing?
Mod 13 Review What is consciousness? What is cognitive neuroscience? What is dual processing? Awareness of self and environment Study of the brain activity linked with cognition (thinking, language, perception, and language) Info is often simultaneously processed conscious and unconsciously

16 Our Divided Brain Our brain is divided into two hemispheres with lateralization (each side of the brain has it’s own job) Left hemisphere processes reading, writing, speaking, mathematical, comprehension skills, and thus termed as the dominant brain in the 1960s. Left hemisphere controls right side of body, right hemisphere controls the left side of the body! OBJECTIVE 5-9| Describe split-brain research, and explain how it helps us to understand the functions of our left and right hemispheres.

17 Language Recognize Faces

18 Split-Brain Demo Corpus Callosum: bundle of nerve fibers that transfers information between the hemispheres of the brain When severed you have a split- brain patient. Michael Gazzaniga & Roger Sperry studied these split-brain patients

19 Our Divided Brain The information highway from the eye to the brain
With the corpus callosum severed, objects (apple) presented in the right visual field can be named. Objects (pencil) in the left visual field cannot.

20 Kahoot!!!!
