1 Equilibrium

2 What is Equilibrium? Equilibrium is a concept used in a variety of disciplines, to express a balance between two or more opposing forces in a system. There are two types of equilibrium - Static - Dynamic

3 Static Equilibrium In static equilibrium, the system is in balance and all parts of the system remain constant The system above is in equilibrium as long as the bugs don’t move

4 What happens if one of the bugs is removed?

5 What happens if one of the bugs is removed?
The system is no longer in equilibrium!

6 What if one of the bugs starts Moving

7 What if one of the bugs starts Moving
The system is no longer in equilibrium !

8 Now what if both bugs start walking toward each other at the same rate?
Even as the bugs are walking the system remains in balance!!

9 Dynamic equilibrium The word Dynamic refers to a system in constant change while Equilibrium means balance In Biology this is often referred to as homeostasis Explain how a system can be in Dynamic Equilibrium.

10 What if? Would a system be in dynamic equilibrium if a steady stream of bugs was walking both right and left?

11 In a group, come up with one example of static equilibrium and at least two examples of dynamic equilibrium. Draw diagrams illustrating each You will present your findings to the class
