How can organisms grow and develop to maintain a stable internal environment? Investigation 1: Stem cells are unspecialized cells that are then programmed by the DNA, which are the instructions to make proteins that help the organism carry out life's functions. Certain genes are turned on in the cell depending on its particular function. These are called specialized cells. Examples of specialized cells are blood cells, nerve cells, and muscle cells.
