1 Four-step approach (2) Identify adaptation options
During the ToT we asked the participants to work in groups and put together all relevant information for their specific topic (water, climate, agriculture, governance, society and economy) and present it to their colleagues

4 The four-step approach: the basic adaptation planning process
The systematic process deals with all questions relevant for planning adaptation. Going one step at a time avoids mental blocks due to the over-complex challenge. Four steps: Assess vulnerability Identify adaptation options Select adaptation measures Develop an M&E framework

5 Rationale Objective Importance Second step of planning adaptation
Collect the broadest possible range of adaptation options Importance Climate change adaptation is new and requires out-of-the-box-thinking Easier said than done  brainstorming

6 Exercise (1) Context Exhibits
Continue work in SWA’s adaptation advisory group  your working group Following the problem assessment in step 1, you start with thinking about possible solutions to ensure sustainable water management under climate change Exhibits Checklist of adaptation options in agricultural and water supply issues

7 Exercise (2) Your task Use Matrix 7 and 8
In column H: Selected climate change vulnerabilities In column I, draft a list of possible adaptation options In column J, reflect on main actors that will be crucial to implement the devised options The exercise is conducted on a brainstorming basis to gather as many ideas as possible. This means that for the time being all ideas that you can come up with are welcome. Important: No idea should be criticized; limiting factors will be reflected during the analysis in the next step. H if you want add from your own work J Options that can prevent, reduce or avoid the damaging biophysical and socio-economic impacts in respect to your given systems of interest and the vulnerabilities in column B. Check Exhibit 6 and select adaptation options that you find helpful. Add by thinking through all categories of adaptation options (see glossary). Also think of adaptation options enhancing opportunities from climate change. Also think of adaptation options enhancing the adaptive capacity of relevant actors.

8 Exercise (3) Results Logistics (please specify) Case work*
Presentation of results (please specify how)* Reflection* *Please use your own examples here.
